Phishing & Scams: how do you recognize them?

Cybercriminals are becoming increasingly clever, and February - a month filled with invoices, administration and official communications - gives them even more opportunities to strike. Phishing and phone scams remain their favourite methods because they exploit trust and time pressure. A message that appears to come from a colleague, supplier or institution, combined with an urgent call to action, makes these attacks highly effective. In Belgium alone, nearly 50 million euros were stolen through phishing fraud in 2024, despite banks successfully blocking a large share of attempts. It shows how quickly one misleading email or phone call can result in a real data breach or financial loss.

Although cybercriminals operate more professionally today, many phishing attempts still reveal themselves through subtle warning signs. Think of unexpected or illogical emails, spelling mistakes, forceful wording, or links that look correct at first glance but actually lead to an unusual URL. Unexpected attachments such as ZIP files or suspicious PDFs remain major red flags as well. The simplest rule still applies: if you have even the slightest doubt, don’t click - and verify the sender through another channel, for example by calling the official number yourself or checking internally whether the message was truly sent.

For organisations, protection starts with awareness, but concrete measures make the real difference. Regular employee training, enabling multi-factor authentication, using modern telephony and email solutions with built-in fraud filters, and following clear procedures for payments and approvals can eliminate many risks. Fast internal reporting of suspicious messages also helps block attacks in their earliest stages.

At Cloud Group, we see every day how sophisticated these techniques are becoming. Even during our own internal tests, we notice how convincing some scenarios can be - let’s just say nobody is completely immune to a well-crafted trap. That’s precisely why we continuously invest in awareness and in solutions that protect organisations. With secure cloud and telephony solutions, complemented by protection layers against phishing, spoofing and fraudulent calls, we ensure organisations remain both safe and reachable.
